What's Happening?
English Language Arts:
Mid-year mCLASS assessments have now been completed! Whew! It will be nice to get back to our normal schedule and routine. You will receive a report of your child's results very soon. As expected, some of the better readers scored slightly below the benchmark level because of the written comprehension component. Please know that this is not unusual or something you should be overly concerned about. We will continue to work on this in class.
Letterland: We began long vowel sounds in January with the introduction of "Silent, Magic, Mr. E" When the vowel is followed by a consonant and Mr. E, the vowel "says his name" and the Magic E is silent. Unit 16 was long a words. Unit 17 was long i and long o words. This week's words were long u and also introduced "ge" /j/ and "ce" /s/.
Writing: We have completed our How To... unit of study and are working on writing our All About books. This is an informational writing which includes a Table of Contents with three "chapters" about a topic of their choosing (sharks, fish, cats, dogs, elephants, the solar system...) Our next unit of writing is a favorite of mine, Author's as Mentors. We will read books by several different authors, study their style of writing, and mimic this in our own writing.
Math:
We are learning about time. We have discussed the passage of time, the different types of clocks, and are telling time to the hour. We will be telling time to the half hour next week. Upon completion of this unit, we will be studying two- and three-dimensional shapes.
Science/Social Studies:
We have been discussing economics (wants, needs, goods, services, producers, consumers, supply and demand). During the entire month of February we will be doing science. Our science unit about rocks, sand, and soil allows for a lot of hands-on exploration. On February 29th, we will have our "in house" field trip, "Science Is Fun".
